How to cut stickers at home
Three ways to cut your printed stickers — from zero tools to precise die-cuts — and how to pick the right one for your project.
Quick answer
You can cut stickers with scissors (simple shapes), a craft knife + cutting mat + ruler (clean straight edges and tight curves), or a cutting machine like a Cricut or Silhouette (precise die-cuts at scale using “print then cut”). For a pro edge, leave a thin 1–2 mm border around each design.
Three ways to cut
Scissors — easiest
Zero setup. Great for circles and simple shapes. Leave a small border and round the corners so they don’t peel.
Craft knife — sharpest
A hobby knife + cutting mat + metal ruler. Best control for straight edges and intricate curves. Watch your fingers.
Cutting machine — at scale
Cricut / Silhouette. Print your sheet with registration marks, then let it “print-then-cut” exact outlines automatically.
The pro touch: a border
Instead of cutting exactly on the artwork edge, leave a thin 1–2 mm white (or colored) border around each sticker. It hides tiny cutting wobbles, makes designs pop, and stops edges from lifting. This “sticker border” is what separates handmade-looking stickers from store-bought ones.
Using a Cricut / Silhouette (print then cut)
- Design your sheet in the machine’s software, or import a pre-made pack.
- Print it on your home printer with registration marks on.
- Load the printed sheet on the machine’s mat; it scans the marks to line up the cut.
- Choose a “sticker paper” or “vinyl” material setting so it cuts the top layer without slicing the backing (a kiss cut).
